The art criticism process begins with describing exactly what you see. Then you have to analyze the piece using the elements/principles to reflect upon the art form. Then you have to consider what the artist is trying to say, what caused the artist to say it, what the historical milieu surrounds the work of art, and why the work of art was created in this particular style. Then you have to evaluate how successful or important the work of art is. This piece is a two-in-one piece. It has a pencil morphing into a tree, a hand morphing into a river, and a pencil mark morphing into a snake. This piece is done in watercolor. This piece took advantage of watercolor blending techniques. The composition of the piece places a hazy feel of this piece. What the artist is trying to do is to create a piece of surrealism. The piece of art was created using watercolor because it allowed the different elements of the piece to have colors that blend together gradually. This piece was successful because of the hazy atmosphere the piece successfully paints. There are many reasons that artists make art. Some artists make art simply for the reason many people do in class. They are rewarded for doing art. However, lots of people do art because they enjoy using their creativity to create works of art. Artists will often feel a sense of pride in a piece that they worked hard on. That is why many artists make art. The warm up that I learned from the most were the hand drawing assignments. I learned the most from this assignment because this was something I had trouble drawing before. Also, this assignment helped me draw other items better through the technique used. That is why I have learned the most from this warm up. The project that I think was my most successful was my perspective piece. The theme of the piece was perspective, and I created the piece by creating a point where lines would meet up. I created the piece using a ruler and making sure all the lines were either horizontal, vertical, or would tough the point when extended. I think this is my most successful piece because I like how it turned out, and how close it looks to the real thing.
My word was love, and I portrayed it by through many hearts on my piece, and through colors thought to be related to love. I used six different mediums and techniques. I used the tissue paper background to get the background color. I used cut paper to form my big shapes. I used sharpie to outline smaller hearts, and oil pastel to fill them in. I put splotches of paint in various locations, and the word love was transferred onto my piece.
I used 1 point perspective. The medium that I picked was pencil, because I enjoy that medium the most, and thought it would allow me to be the most precise with it. The photo that I drew was a photo of the hallway in my house, specifically my bedroom door. One thing that I found difficult about the project was the amount of precision and effort required to make an accurate display of the picture I drew.
My piece shows off the theme of "line" through the fact that the piece is showing lots of interesting patterns through the use of simple lines.
One way that my piece is successful is that the general idea of my piece is expressed, but if I were to do my piece again, I would change the piece by making more complicated and intricate patterns in my piece. After my piece came out of the kiln for the first time, I decided to use both glaze and paint to color my pottery. Glaze is a substance that you put on your pieces, and it changes into a glossy appearance and feel when fired in the kiln. I applied blue to the sky in my piece, and the lid black. Then my piece was ready to be put into the kiln. Already piece came out of the kiln, it was then glazeware. Glazeware is a ceramic ware that has been fired at a high temperature with glaze, which forms a coating of glass onto the surface. Firing a piece is when you hear pottery or clay sculptures to a temperature high enough to render the clay hard and durable. I then painted the rainbow on my piece, and then my piece was complete.
One thing that I find successful about my finished piece is the fact that the glass in the lid turned out really well, giving a cool look to the piece. If I were to do this one again, I would change the handle of he piece so hat it would be taller, and make the lid slide less on my piece. I plan to complete my piece by putting black glaze on the lid, and filling the lid with glass, which will melt. After it comes outda of the kiln, I will paint the parts that I am leaving blank. I will be using acrylic paint to paint a rainbow and the clouds on my piece. One thing that I have found difficult to far was attaching the rainbow and clouds to the jar. This was challenging because my piece is round, and it was hard to get the clay to curl around the box. It was also hard to make the clouds stay on because they had to go over the rainbow. I think that the shape of my piece has been successful. I think the shape of my lid was successful too, although I wish that my lid was more circular. My process up to this point started with me taking a thick slab of clay. I ran that slab of clay in the slab roller, where that thick slab of clay became one fourth of an inch thick. I then laid out that piece and cut it how I wanted it. Then I wrapped the clay around a pipe to give it a good circular shape. My clay did not quite reach around the pipe, so I had to roll it around on the table to stretch it out slightly. I then repeated the slab process in order to get clay for my lid. I made a template using a piece of paper, and cut out two circles of clay. I cut out the inside of one circle, and used the scratch and slip method for attaching the pieces together, scratching up both pieces and wetting them to make sure that they stuck together, to create my lid. I then created two more circles to make my handle. Then I shaped my rainbow and clouds out of another slab, and scratched and slipped that to my piece. Then my piece was ready to be fired. Greenware is an unfired pottery or sculpture piece. Firing a piece is when you heat pottery in order to make it hard and durable. This is done in what is called a kiln. Bisqueware is a ceramic piece that has gone through the first firing at a relatively low temperature, and is ready to be glazed before going back into the kiln.
